METROPOLIS : AN INDUSTRIAL VISION OF FUTURISM

AN INDUSTRIAL VISION OF FUTURISM

METROPOLIS

Sylwia Makris latest photography series draws inspiration from Fritz Lang’s cult film Metropolis, reimagining its aesthetics within the setting of contemporary industrial landscapes. The photos were taken at the Gdańsk Shipyard – a place of daily hard labor in shipbuilding. Towering port cranes became the backdrop where the classic vision of a dystopian future took on a new, raw character.
Costumes played a central role in this project, serving as the artist’s primary inspiration. Their cinematic origins, followed by a unique reinterpretation by world-renowned designer Katarzyna Konieczka, gave the photographs a distinct, theatrical quality. The session featured model Anna Kołodziejczyk, with makeup created by Klaudia Kot.
During the creative process, the figure of Maria emerged – a symbol of hope and humanity. In this industrial setting, her presence took on new meaning, forming a bridge between the legendary vision of the future and the stark reality of the modern world.
